types of fostering

short breaks

There are many young people and children with a disability who need a foster family. This can include children with physical disabilities, learning disabilities, sensory impairments or a combination of these.

Short break Foster Carers become an extension of a family, offering a loving environment when it’s needed most.

Short break foster care is important for families with a disabled child. It offers that little break away for a child and family who need it most. It isn’t defined by a particular length of time, but offers a short getaway for a night or a weekend.

We are looking for confident, friendly, motivated and responsible people to care for local disabled children. You must be 21 years or older and have a spare bedroom in your home.  No previous experience of fostering is required. A full fostering assessment will be completed before a child comes to stay with you.

There are no specific hours. You can offer up to six weekends a year, or as many as you wish. The hours are flexible and can be tailored to suit you and the families you support.

“Because short breaks foster care is a regular thing, you get to know the children so well so it becomes really familiar. This is the difference between short break disability and general, I think, because you have the children on set days throughout the year. Our home becomes their second home”
