how it works
the process
the process
You’re ready to start the fostering process, but how long does it take in Conwy, what paperwork is involved, and what are the steps you need to take?
the first step – get in touch
The first step in the process is to pick up the phone, or send an email, to make an initial enquiry. Once you’ve done this, your journey has begun.
We’ll take your essential details so we can start to gain insight into your situation. You’ll receive an information pack, which clarifies what it’s like to be a foster carer.
step 2 – the home visit
After you’ve made an initial enquiry, we’ll start the process of getting to know you. There will be some paperwork followed by a home visit or a virtual video call.
It’s important that we build a relationship with you from the start, so we can understand who means the most to you and learn where home is.
step 3 – the training
We run a three-day training course to equip you with the skills and information you need to become a foster carer. You’ll have the chance to meet members of the Foster Wales Conwy team, as well as other carers in the community, in a relaxed environment.
“we met a lot of great people who we now consider friends and we help and support each other when we need it” – Foster Carer, Conwy
step 4 – the assessment
During the assessment, you’ll learn what fostering will mean for you. It’s essential to remember that the assessment isn’t a test; it enables us to gain an understanding of your family setup and a chance for you and your family to ask questions.
Assessments are conducted by social workers and consider a family’s strengths and vulnerabilities.
step 5 – the panel
Social care workers and independent members sit on the Foster Wales panel. They evaluate your assessment from all angles and look at every foster carer on an individual basis.
The panel will provide recommendations on what might work best for your current situation.
step 6 – the foster care agreement
The foster care agreement sets out what being a foster carer involves. This written agreement details daily responsibilities, along with the wider support and guidance you’ll provide – plus how we’ll support you on your journey.
